Not a Kabhi Alvida... review (updated)

Nonetheless, I don't see why that should stop me from bitching about the film. It's stupid, stupid, stupid. Also moronic. Tries too hard, fails miserably, very wannabe-cool, disgustingly opulent (but then what did you expect?), terrible performance by Shahrukh Khan, Amitabh has bloody awful one-liners, Karan Johar has matured my muddy, also bloody, left foot, horribly clichéd sequences and long boring Tulsi Virani type speeches. The film tries too bloody hard and is too bloody stupid.
Having thus vented, however...

1. Get me a man like Bachhan junior in the film.
2. Priety slapping Shahrukh was a nice touch. Unexpected. Which is surprising, because it's quite in character.
3. Oooh, totally wrong and totally pwetty clothes! Oooh, Rani M's cleavage! Fuck, where did her tummy go?
4. Ooh, Priety Z's cleavage! Abhishek B's back! Fuck!
5. Proving the lovely Bagchi wrong on bothe counts, there IS sex in the film (wee li'l bits and very Bollywood -- bare upper male torso and female arms and back moving in slow-mo), including attempts thereof between married couples who cannot have children. I mean, then what's the point only, no?
And Rani and Shahrukh DO have sex. In probably the same hotel their partners are dancing to 'Where's the party tonight'.

On the whole, incredible and completely inadvertant entertainment. Worth a hundred bucks any day. And now we wait for the Greatbong review [Update: here's some more].

P.S: I cannot believe Wikipedia already has an entry on it, with a plot summary! Is this the completely superfluous final proof that no one goes to see a KJ film for the stowee?
P.S II: Do not, repeat do NOT go see this film alone. Love, support and arm to clutch to prevent ROFL moments desperately required.

Update: I see in today's The Telegraph (and have been told of similiar reports on the premiere news channels of the country) 'expert opinions' - Komal Nahta's and Taran Adarsh's being two such - to the effect that this is a 'bold and mature' film that has/will fail because the Indian audience cannot accept the dissolution of the the 'institution of marriage' shown in the film.

It seems JAP was right about morons all along. And therefore, this intra-industry arse-patting would have been greeted with cynical smiles had it not in one fell swoop managed to insult the intelligence of the entire nation. Stupid spineless sods.

The clothes and the houses. I came out wishing I could live in a Karan Johar movie - without the infidelity and endless tears, of course.

Both Mr. Johar and Mr. Khan think it's a bold movie. Yeah, right!! I think the only bold "thing(s)", would be the audience who were bold enough to watch it even after knowing what to expect.

Good Post..:-)

that bad, eh? not to watch, then?

Ok ok, so there is some sex. But it's the spirit of the thing that matters, right? And it's certainly not pouring out of anybody's ears, right? As in it's all very insipid, boring type sex which hardly amounts to anything. I mean, what I'm trying to say is, I wasn't really wrong.

Rohini--I'm more than willing to live in the house, as long as I have an in-house mechanical maintenance crew. I have a horror of help that lives in. Oh, and welcome :-)

A--or so they say! They can hardly afford to to trash their own film, no? But their interviews are so inane, my god! Are people reallyt that stupid? And thank you :)

M--no no, watch only! Then we can bitch about it! :D

Shrabonti--*chuckles delightedly* Oh no, you're not! The only nice bit was Abhishek trying (and failing) to make love to Rani. And them making out during the ballet. That was unexpected, no?

So all you liked abt the movie was the sex and cleavage shows(wonder wonder)...can't be too bad then :)
Nice review @ youthcurry.blogspot.com.

Trying hard to conceive kind of sex, cleavage and backs. Very bold indeed.

So with all this buzz and gushing about the wardrobe, I had to go check out some stills from the film (since I haven't seen the film yet). And I'm so so sorry to say, but the wardrobe is ridiculous. No one in NY dresses like that!

A lot of Abhishek's outfits are very 90s Miami style. Has Manish Malhotra perchance looked at a NY yuppie lately? And the girls are even worse, the NY desi fashionistas are sniggering at Preity and Rani's wardrobe as we speak. Sample this:

For a look at what a lot of well-dressed NYers look like, including those who actually work in the fashion industry (unlike La Zinta), check out this blog:

Deep--reserve judgement till you see it, pal! THEN we'll talk :D

And re. Reshma's review, it's a good read, but I do not agree with her glowing praise of Kiron Kher's character's decision to stay on with her ex daughter-in-law stems entirely from such wonderfully high ideals. You must remember that let alone the lifestyle she's used to, her son probably could not even provide a decent apartment for her. So. Perhaps a tad cynical, but few people live life on an exclusive diet of ideals.

Mithun--too bad it doesn't redeem the film even an inch. No?

Arka--the 'prudish bagchi'??? *VERY raised eyebrows* I'm afraid I noticed no such things about her :P

DD--I thought so too, jaano? But then again, it's a little TOO detailed, tai bhablam...

Swati--oh dear, I needs must defend myself. When I say I love the clothes (and admittedly I have only about three outfits in mind) I mean I like the clothes. Taken out of context as it were.

In further defence of self, I must (blushingly) add that I have the exact outfit as the first woman on the sartorialist blog. Except that I cannot wear the top in Cal, sigh. My sense of style breathes easy.

Also, thanks for the link. Brilliant idea, I must say. If I had a better camera in my phone, I'd sefinitely have posts on how Cal people dress. It's mostly dreadful.

thalassa_mikra said...

Oh you're absolutely right. The clothes minus context are fine enough, but jarring given the style of the city they are set in.

You're one stylish girl! That outfit is very pretty, but yes a bit too daring for Cal. I can imagine teaming it with a nice light cardigan, flat ballet shoes and 2-3 long bead malas for a very chic look.

Oh please do start a Sartorialist Cal version. I actually think there are lots of very well-dressed girls out there who need to be outed online :).

Just to say I'm back. And to remind all you disgustingly mobile ppl that I haven't seen a 'new' movie since Rang De Basanti many moons ago.

BUT I would watch KANK just once, for the clothes. I always love watching clothes anywhere at all, and while Shah Rukh Khan's not very excitingly dressed, Pretty Zinta is!

Oh, that she is, and very much so. Quite victorian, in fact. My erotic masterpiece was dubbed a poetic tribute to the pornographic industry by her. I wish she reads this soon. I sooo want a public mud-slinging match :-D

Still Dancer: Just because I don't appreciate the poetic outpourings of your frustrated err soul, does not mean I have Victorian values. It merely indicates, my dear boy, that I have taste.

the still dancer said...

ah, and your sexual aesthetics run into Karan Johar? wonerous indeed!!

Priya said...

Rimi, you just should shoo that dancer with two left feet away, right now! As for KANK, can't waste 200 bucks and bear to watch even for the heck of B Jr (*drool drooool*). Siigh!

The Marauder's Map said...

Yes wonerous indeed.
